A MAN from Dyserth celebrated winning a special £2,000 prize at a pub quiz in Dyserth last night (July 13).

Jake Conwy-Davies won the jackpot at the fortnightly quiz at the Blue Lion Inn yesterday evening, sharing the winnings with his brother.

He regularly attends the quiz, but admitted he had never come close to winning that amount of money previously.

“I may have won one or two pounds on a scratch card before, but I’ve never won that amount of money before,” he said.

“We do the quiz quite often there; (managers) Megan (Banks) and Jonny (White) are running it really well. It’s always a very busy, vibrant place, and there are always about 100 people doing the quiz.

“It’s really nice to see a pub in the countryside thriving, and obviously, it was great to win that amount of money.

“I split it with my brother.. it’d be nice to spend it on something that you wouldn’t normally buy, but I’m not sure yet!”

The pub is also raising money for four different causes – St Kentigern Hospice, Dyserth NSPCC, Pet Rescue Welfare Association, and Love Hope Strength Foundation.

Everyone who enters the quiz pays £1, which goes towards the charities’ donations.

So far, £1,679 has been raised, and when £2,000 is reached, Megan said the pub’s quizmasters company has agreed to match the total, doubling it.

She said: “Obviously, £2,000 for a little pub quiz is ridiculously high – it was our biggest jackpot yet – and I was pleased for Jake that it was him who won it!

“We’re just trying to put some money back into the community, and help local people and other businesses in the immediate area.

“We’ve been here just over a year now and it’s been a great success; a lot busier than I thought it’d be.”
