FOR Eunice Grayson and Kathy Batterbee, the surprise April closure of “The Chippy” in Rhyl marked the end of a 30-year chapter for both, each having spent that long working at the fish and chip shop on Grange Road.
But they were quickly taken under the wing of Les & Rita’s Fish Bar on Wellington Road, a business run by the same family since it was launched in 1968.
Between the two of them and Kay Pidduck, part-owner and daughter of Les and Rita Pidduck, the three have roughly 115 years’ experience behind the counter.
Eunice and Kathy started at Les & Rita’s in mid-May and have settled in seamlessly.
Kay, who jokes that her parents had two babies in 1968 – her and the chippy - said: “I’d never met them before they joined. I put an advert on Facebook that we needed staff, and they just popped in on the off-chance.
“I thought I’d give them a chance – and so far, so good! It’s been nice working and chatting with them, and they get on really well with all of the other girls here.
“All of my staff have been brilliant over the last couple of years, allowing me to be able to help my mum out while my dad has been really poorly.
“They’ve all just pulled their weight and done such a brilliant job here.”
Kathy, who has lived in Rhyl for her entire life and has been working in chippies since she was a teenager, met Eunice through her work at “The Chippy”.
She said: “It’s just nice to meet people who come into the chippy, and chat about everyday general things with them.
“Kay and all of the staff here are lovely. We all take it in turns to do different jobs; ‘waiting on’, washing the pots, serving on the counter - we’re not always doing same thing, which is good.”
Eunice added: “It’s great to work here. It made it easier having Kathy come with me, because it meant I knew someone already, but everyone here has been great with us.
“A lot of the customers here used to go to The Chippy, as well, so it’s nice to still see them, too. It’s a really nice place to work.”
