A YOUNG boxer from Meliden has celebrated winning a silver medal at a UK-wide championship event held in Scotland last weekend.

Alfie Lewis, a 16-year-old student at Prestatyn High School, was runner-up in his 60kg weight class after two bouts at the Motherwell event.

This followed the gold medal he won at the Boxam International Tournament 2023, held in La Nucia, Spain, last month.

He was supported in Motherwell by his incredibly proud parents, Dan and Rachel.

Dan said: “He had to settle for silver this time, but it was still a massive achievement.

“In his semi-final on June 3, he beat a boxer from Scotland unanimously, but lost a fiercely-fought battle against England’s number one on June 4.

“We were still very proud. There’s nobody more dedicated than him. He puts his heart and soul into it; that’s why losing gets to him so much.”

Alfie’s success comes just weeks after he was also crowned the junior Welsh 60kg champion for the second year running.

He took up boxing aged eight, represents Llandudno ABC, and trains with his dad, Dan, at his gym, Warrior Fitness North Wales.

Next up for him is likely to be the European championships in Romania later this year.

After winning gold at the Welsh Box Cup in October 2021, where he was also crowned best schoolboy, Alfie was also champion of the Manchester Box Club last July, before beating Ireland’s number one in December.
