RHYL Rugby Club will re-open tomorrow (May 9) after it had closed until further notice following “unforeseen circumstances”.
On Saturday morning (May 6), Cllr Brian Jones, who represents Rhyl Ty Newydd ward on Denbighshire County Council, said he saw "circa 15 vehicles" at Tynewydd Fields.
This afternoon (May 8), though, Cllr Jones said the last of the vehicles had left the premises, but another encampment had set up at the town's Sainsbury's supermarket in Rhyl.
Cllr Jones said: "There should be some weekend mechanism in place to make enforcement possible.
"As it stood, it was going to be tomorrow (May 9) before anything could happen with Denbighshire County Council.
"I'll be asking the question to the council about there being weekend provisions."
Police were also spotted attending the scene on Saturday morning.
A club statement read: “Rhyl Rugby Club will be back open tomorrow (May 9) at 9am."
Lee Blackmore, manager of Rhyl Rugby Club, urged the police to take greater action following this “annoying” course of events.
Mr Blackmore said: “They said they were going tonight (May 8), but we’re disappointed with the police. We’ve got them bolt-cropping the locks on CCTV, but police said they haven’t got the resources (to deal with it).
“The council have provided portable toilets for them. We’ve got a duty of care to our staff, and to the children who play here.
“But there are dogs running everywhere now, so kids obviously can’t play here at the moment. There was a wedding reception on Saturday afternoon with 140 guests which we had to cancel.
“We were meant to have Carmarthen Athletic up here on tour on Sunday, who Abergele RFC kindly offered to take instead.
“It’s annoying when we’ve got them on CCTV bolt-cutting the locks, but the police aren’t doing anything.”
The club’s Monday night fun club for adults with special needs has also had to be cancelled tonight.
On Saturday, a North Wales Police spokesperson said: “North Wales Police are aware of an unauthorised encampment at Rhyl Rugby Club, and are working with colleagues from Denbighshire County Council.”
Cllr Jones, upon noticing the caravans on Saturday morning, added: "The coronation weekend at the club has been ruined.
"I really feel for all of those people (affected)."
Attempts have been made to contact police and Denbighshire County Council for further comment.
