A BOXER from Meliden has celebrated being named the junior Welsh 60kg champion for the second year running.

Alfie Lewis, a 16-year-old student at Prestatyn High School, retained his title after two successful bouts at a championship at the Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff on April 29.

After winning gold at the Welsh Box Cup in October 2021, where he was also crowned best schoolboy, Alfie was also champion of the Manchester Box Club last July, before beating Ireland’s number one in December.

He took up boxing aged eight, represents Llandudno ABC, and trains with his dad, Dan, at his gym, Warrior Fitness North Wales.

Dan, who watch Alfie at last weekend’s final with his mother and fellow club members, said: “The nerves never get any better (watching him), but the more bouts he has, the easier it’s getting.

“He’s growing in confidence every time; he’s off to Spain in two weeks to compete against people from all over the world, which we’re going to go with him to and use as a little mini holiday!

“After that, he goes on to the British championships, which is being held in Motherwell, so hopefully, all being well, he’ll become the British champion - he just missed out last year and got silver.

“We see boxing as his job now. He’ll be leaving school in a few weeks, and then hopefully, he’ll be taken on by the elite team in South Wales, and then that will be his job going forward.

“He’s working towards the Commonwealth Games.”
