A PROPOSAL to create a “charging zone” for electric vehicles (EVs) at a petrol station in Prestatyn has been granted planning permission.

Submitted by Motor Fuel Group, the application will see four EV chargers introduced at the BP station on Marine Road.

The development will involve the “creation of a charging zone, erection of EV chargers, erection of canopy, sub-station enclosure and associated forecourt works”.

Denbighshire County Council’s planning department approved the plans on April 18.

Extracts from a letter written by CarneySweeney, agents acting on behalf of Motor Fuel Group, read: “At present, it is understood that the uneven spread of EV charging facilities significantly hinders the take-up of electric vehicles, due to potential servicing constraints.

“Enroute charging for longer journeys is deemed crucial to support the switch to EV and reduce concerns about charge ‘range anxiety’.

“Motor Fuel Group is the UK’s largest independent forecourt operator, with over 900 sites offering a dual-fuel strategy, convenient retail and ‘food to go’.

“The aspiration of Motor Fuel Group is to provide access to convenient and affordable charging, regardless of where the driver lives.

“The EV charging proposals are considered to positively respond to the local and national planning policy context and the wider UK aspiration to promptly improve the EV charging network.

“There are no physical environmental or designation constraints which would inhibit the occupation of the site for the proposed use.”

Neither Natural Resource Wales, nor Prestatyn Town Council, made any objections to the plans when consulted.

Last June, Denbighshire County Council switched on two public charging points at Kings’ Avenue short stay car park in Prestatyn.

This was followed in December by a 36-vehicle charging hub at West Kinmel Street car park in Rhyl; the second-largest of its kind in the UK.
