SUPERMARKET chain Iceland has ceased trading at its store in a Rhyl shopping centre ahead of schedule.

The shop in the town’s White Rose Centre shut its doors on Saturday (March 11), after the company had said last month that it would be closing on March 14.

As for what will take its now-vacant unit at the shopping centre, a White Rose spokesperson said: “We have had a couple of initial offers.”

Iceland said it took the decision to close its Rhyl store following a continuous decline in business at the site.

An Iceland spokesperson told the Journal last month: “It is never easy to take the decision to close a store, but trade in the shopping centre has been declining for years.”

Iceland has other Denbighshire sites at Clwyd Retail Park in Rhuddlan, and on Prestatyn’s High Street.

The spokesperson added: “We are confident that we will be able to serve our many loyal in-store and online customers in the area equally well from our nearby stores on Clwyd Retail Park and in Prestatyn.”

A White Rose Centre spokesperson told the Journal last month: “The landlord is disappointed to see Iceland leave the centre, especially when so many other retailers, including Specsavers, Warren James, New Look and EE have recently renewed their leases.

“We understood from store feedback that this unit traded well. However, Iceland have decided to rationalise their interests within their out-of-town store at Clwyd Retail Park.

“We are following up leads with potential occupiers, as the unit has both the benefit of rooftop parking and secure servicing arrangements, and is positioned in a key area of the mall adjacent to Sports Direct/USC.”
