A PUB on Rhyl’s High Street has been taken on by a new landlord.

As of today (February 27), The Cob and Pen, at 143 High Street, is under the ownership of Shaun Ketley, who was delighted to take on “the best pub in Rhyl”.

It was previously owned by Noel Clements and his wife, Amanda, who ran the pub for roughly eight years.

The pub, a three-storey building with a beer garden and which overlooks Rhyl’s bus and train stations, had been put on the market with Sidney Phillips for £460,000 (freehold).

Shaun, who has previously owned pubs in Towyn and Connah’s Quay, said: “I’d been in the trade for 10 to 15 years, came out of it about two-and-a-half years ago due to personal reasons and needing a bit of a break, and thought I’d never get back into it.

“I missed it, and missed being busy, so I bought The Cob and Pen because, let’s be honest, it’s the best pub in Rhyl. It’s got a nice atmosphere, and nice people.

“It ticked all of the boxes. Amanda and Noel (Clements) started the business, and have made it into such a nice pub; the people around here really respect them.”

Shaun lived in Kinmel Bay but will moving into the premises, where he has also launched a new food menu.

Food will also be served for a longer period of time now – from 12-6pm every day, as opposed to 12-3pm previously.

He added: “We’ve just put on some traditional pub grub, with nice portion sizes, at decent prices. There are quite a few people in right now, eating and drinking.”

“We didn’t want the pub to close, because it gets a lot of locals. It’s just a nice community pub, with a good reputation, at a lovely location.”
