A COMMUNITY group based in Rhyl has generously donated 15 portable DVD players to the children’s unit at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan.

“Rhyl Wings Projects” delivered them to the ward at the hospital on Friday (February 3), having purchased them from the B&M store in Rhyl earlier.

It follows the group’s donations of two Christmas presents each to 22 children at the hospital in December.

Steve Ridyard, of Rhyl Wings Projects, said: “We’ve raised a touch under £5,000 (altogether), and spent over £600 on the DVD players.

“It was nice to give them to children in need. They initially said they were just after a couple of DVD players, but I said we’d do better than that.

“They were over the moon. It’s going to a good cause – none of us want to see our kids in hospital, but unfortunately, it does happen.

“It was quite touching, and it makes all of the hard work worthwhile. We’ve all worked really, really hard.”

Record-breaking numbers enjoy Christmas Eve community event in Rhyl

The Rhyl Wings Projects has raised thousands since being established last year, and held a Christmas Eve community event in the town to support the homeless and vulnerable with presents, refreshments and much more.

Steve added: “We donated the toys before Christmas, and the hospital said that, if not for us, the kids would have had nothing.

“We’re going to keep £2,000 in the bank, and the rest of the money we’re going to distribute among the seven Rhyl Wings members each month.

“People have just been sharing the good word, and it’s just gone from strength to strength. The whole community spirit has been great, we’re all pulling together.”
