A TALENTED teenage dancer is hot-footing it towards a career in the West End after a sparkling display in a major national competition.

Evie Carr, a Year 10 pupil at Myddelton College, Denbigh, was voted Outstanding Competitor in the Tap Class at the UK Dance Class Champion of Champions in Liverpool.

The 14-year-old, who qualified for the finals earlier in the year, also finished second in the Modern category.

Evie, from Llanasa, near Prestatyn, started dancing at just two-and-a-half when her mum, Rachel, enrolled her in the North Wales School of Dance in Rhyl, Prestatyn and Ruthin to help her overcome her shyness and her feet have hardly touched the floor since.

She said: “No-one in my family had danced but my mum thought it would help my confidence so she booked me into classes and although at first I hated it, I soon grew to love it.”

Evie has already danced with former Pussycat Doll Kimberley Wyatt in London and has been inspired by the posts of American social media dance star Autumn Miller and said: “I just love watching her dance.”

She has competed widely including in the Dance World Cup in Braga in Portugal where she finished second in the Jazz Showdance.

Evie moved to Myddelton College, which opened in 2015 and is one of the UK’s newest private schools, in September and has settled quickly.

She said: “It’s a very friendly school and they are very positive and encourage you really well whether you want to do horse-riding or swimming or dance.

“My dream is to be a West End dancer and maybe one day join a group of New York dancers called The Rockettes. I’d love to be one of them.

“Jazz is my favourite style. It just makes me feel really happy and I love musical theatre and West End shows.

“I enjoy doing different styles at my local dance school and during Covid we were all at home a lot and there are lots of on-line dance classes so I danced through it really.

“Myddelton also make such good use of social media and they promote and encourage us which is really good.

“I’d like to do my A-levels here. I love Drama as well as Maths and English and then go on to dance college at Laine Theatre Arts in Surrey and then audition in London for West End shows.

“Ultimately I’d like to get into teaching dance and have my own dance school.”

Mum Rachel – her dad Andy is the professional Prestatyn Golf Club - added: “She was very shy when she was little and I’d have to go in with her but something just clicked and she’s loved it.

“It’s her life and she lives for dance.

“It was really tough in lockdown but she discovered all these choreographers had gone online and she made friends with a lot of them so that people she had looked up to she is now learning from.”

Myddelton headmaster Andrew Allman said: “Evie has settled in well at the school since arriving in September and it will be great to use her expertise to help others with dance and that will enhance her own college application.

“We have a close connection with Stagecoach Performing Arts in Denbigh and they’ve agreed to allow our students to get involved with them with lessons and take part in their shows.

“We are always keen to work with local organisations and strengthen our bonds with the community in and around Denbigh as it is a major benefit to the school and to the local area.”

Myddelton College, an award winning Independent co-educational day and boarding school, was the UK’s newest independent school when it opened in the autumn of 2016 and is the only school in North Wales with a 5G network.

The school currently has 340 pupils, 75 of them boarders and 70 staff, 35 of them teachers.

Mr Allman added: “We want to provide to well-rounded education and give all our pupils a breadth of opportunities, indoors and outdoors including the chance to work with and form bonds with people and countries all over the world.”
