A TALENTED and ambitious 22-year-old golfer has won a place on the Ladies European professional golf tour.
Lea-Anne Bramwell, of Abergele, has been a pro golfer since the beginning of 2022.
Dad Jason said: "Winning a place on the Ladies European Tour means the absolute world to her and also her coach and family. She has been part of Wales Golf for a few years and part of the programme is to set some goals from short term through to long term. Always part of that long term dream has been to get on the Ladies European Tour.
"It is just one of those pipe dreams that is so far away. It’s like us saying 'I want to be a millionaire one day'. It is the goal of just about any serious junior girl golfer and is seen as the pinnacle of European golf."
In terms of her career, Lea-Anne planned to turn professional in 2022 then apply to play on the Ladies European Tour Access series, which is a feeder tour for the main tour, and then get in Q School [for experience].
Jason said: "She went with the knowledge that it was just experience and to learn as much as possible to help her further down the line. Once she made it through all the qualifying games, which was eight rounds of competitive golf followed by the final round to confirm positions, she was in complete disbelief that she had made it so far she said to us ‘I really shouldn’t be here, I don’t feel its real’. She had a really good final round and was on the 18th green in the knowledge that the put she was about to hit, some 25’, was in fact to secure a place on the Ladies European Tour.
"When we spoke to her later on she said she could hardly enter her scores for crying. It is beyond a dream."
The tour is more of a world tour rather than just Europe. Locations include places like Kenya, South Africa, Dubai, Australia and Asia.
Jason said: "It is similar to the tour she went on in 2022 whereby she travels to the venue a few days in advance to get the feel for the course and to play a couple of practice rounds. The ladies will then compete over three or four rounds of golf. There will generally be a cut before the final round, miss this then you earn nothing and go home. Anyone making the cut will make some money. Winners checks can be about £30 - £40K down to about £1.5k for just making the cut.
"Making the tour is by far the biggest thing Lea-Anne has done in her life, she has always been a good amateur wining several competitions such as the Welsh Ladies championship, Junior European Open etc. She has also been a Welsh International at Junior and Senior level. This has given her a huge boost to her confidence and belief in herself. She has been through so much in her short life that at last she can see all her hard work paying off.
"2022 has been a great year as a rookie pro golfer," Jason added.
"She won the ladies order of merit on the Clutch Tour which is a mixed gender tour playing against the men in the same competition. She was on the Ladies European Tour most of the season and managed some good results finishing in 40th place in the order of merit.
"2023 will be the biggest year in her life up to date, she will be up against Europe’s best lady golfers and will be trying to qualify for the British Open. Being on the tour means there is more money to be won and a proper self-funded career, she has been supported by us, her family, all through the years, trying to work as she can to get some money."
