A GROUP of “breast friends” have arranged a fundraiser day in Prestatyn to support the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan.

Sally Smart, secretary of the Prestatyn Business Forum, felt determined to raise money for the unit after the “phenomenal” treatment she has received there since she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She is being helped by a number of Prestatyn women who also have breast cancer, many of whom met at the unit in Glan Clwyd while undergoing treatment.

As a show of gratitude to the unit, a coffee afternoon will be held at The Hideaway, on Prestatyn High Street, on Sunday October 9, from 12-4pm, followed by “Congo Bongo Boogie Bingo” (£10 per person) at the same venue from 5.30pm.

The event has been named “F**k Cancer”.

Sally said: “There are six of us, all going through the same thing at the same age – mostly, we’ve met in the chemotherapy units, at the time of having treatment.

“I had my mammogram in January, and it was a week later that they told me it was cancer.

“I had surgery in February, and chemotherapy from April. I’m still in every three weeks, having targeted therapy.

“I’m doing really, really well. The treatment goes on, but that’s all to keep me going now, so it’s good stuff. The unit at Glan Clwyd are incredible, they’re phenomenal.

“On my last day having treatment, I was in a tiny room with one of the ladies who is a ‘breast friend’ now, and the chair I was sat in was broken, so I couldn’t sit up or lie down for five minutes.

“I thought: ‘If I survive this, I’m going to raise some money’, even if they just want to buy a new chair or something. It’s just snowballed, really.”

Sally’s partner, Iwan Roberts, has also just returned from Mount Kilimanjaro, which he climbed to raise £1,600 for the cause.

The event will also feature cakes from Sugar Bee Bake Shop, and live music from Andy Fogg, while a great number of Prestatyn business have donated raffle prizes.

These include hotel stays, flowers, glamping, meals, champagne, and vouchers for beauty products and scents.

She added: “He (Iwan) has just got back from Kilimanjaro - he did an eight-day trek to get up there!

“We’re up to about £3,000 already. We’ve had so many local businesses donate amazing prizes – things like hotel and glamping pods stays, a £100 tattoo voucher – we’ve had over 50 (involved).”

Raffle tickets can be bought from The Deli on the Hill, 137 High Street.
