JOURNAL readers have shared their memories of being in the company of Queen Elizabeth II, including the time she visited Rhyl in the 1950s.

The Queen died yesterday (September 8) after 70 years on the throne, the longest-reigning monarch in British history.

Rhyl resident Peter Trehearn shared a treasured family photo of the Queen's visit to the town in July 1953, a year after her ascension to the throne.

He said: "I was four years old at a street party in Holland Park Drive, wearing a red, white and blue sleeveless jumper, knitted by my mother.

"The photo was taken, I think, by my uncle, Mervyn Lott, or my father, Vernon Trehearn, outside the side entrance to Vern's Arcade.

"The Queen is travelling down Queen Street, away from the prom, as it was in those days.

"My memory is of jelly, my sleeveless red, white and blue jumper which I was fond of, and failing to spot the Queen when her car went past.

"I've seen and heard some wonderful tributes, all well-deserved."

Meanwhile, a woman from Ruthin has shared a photograph, and her memories, of when she met the Queen 12 years ago.

Anne Roberts was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to North Wales Police, and received her MBE from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace on October 20, 2010.

Anne said: "You don't know who will present the awards until after arriving at the palace.

"In my case, it was the Queen, and that made it even more special!"

Anne was appointed a MBE after 23 years as a member civilian staff for the force, based on the front counter in various stations.

Elsewhere, a former mayor of Prestatyn and Meliden has sent his condolences to the Queen's family and shared photos and memories of his times in the company of the Royal Family.

Gerry Frobisher, who was mayor three times, called Queen Elizabeth II "a remarkable person" who "will be missed".

Mr Frobisher was appointed a MBE in 2007, receiving his MBE from King Charles III, who he has met on five occasions.

The other four times he has met King Charles III since then were through his volunteering work with Young Dragons Wales, an umbrella organisation working with, supporting and promoting all of the uniformed youth groups in Wales.

He also attended two garden parties at Buckingham Palace, in 2014 and 2015, where the Queen and Prince Philip were both present.

He said: "Very sad news. HM Queen Elizabeth ll was a very remarkable person who made it her life's work in serving the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

"On the world stage and at home, she will be missed.

"King Charles lll will continue where the Queen left off. I wish him all the best for the future.

"My condolences go to King Charles and the whole Royal Family.

"I was a school boy in 1969 when I first saw the Queen.

"I was brought up in Caernarfon at the time of the investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales, and saw her being driven past in her horse-drawn carriage

"I was a policeman on duty in 1991 when the Queen opened the Conwy Tunnel.

"My wife Sharon and I were invited as mayor and mayoress to Eirias Park, Colwyn Bay for the Queen's Golden Jubilee visit in 2002.

"I was outside Mold Church in 2003 when the Queen visited North Wales. My wife Sharon was inside the church and met the Queen and Prince Philip."

Prestatyn councillor recalls meeting with the Queen following Platinum Jubilee

In February of this year, when Queen Elizabeth II became the first British monarch to celebrate 70 years on the throne, Mr Frobisher told the Journal: “I met the Queen in April 2010 when I was working with Denbighshire Voluntary Services Council (DVSC) as the youth volunteering officer.

“It was at Venue Cymru in Llandudno, and it was a showcasing event publicising the six voluntary councils in North Wales and a variety of invited voluntary organisations from North Wales.

“We chatted mainly about what I did with DVSC and the benefits on offer in North Wales for young people to volunteer.

“The Queen is the figurehead of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth; it was such an honour to have been able to meet her and to have the opportunity to hold a short conversation with her.”
