THE Prestatyn Classic Car Show drew huge crowds yesterday (August 29) as it made a return for the first time in three years.

The exhibition started in 2000, but having been cancelled in both 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s show was an unofficial 20th anniversary.

Huge crowds went along to yesterday’s show, with more than 300 vehicles lining the High Street, nearby car park and are by the Christ Church, with both residents and car enthusiasts getting a glimpse of motoring from the past.

Among the many highlights was a Morris Minor collection courtesy of the North Wales branch of the Morris Minor Owners Club, a gold Pontiac Firebird, an impressive navy Ford Mustang, and a Chevrolet Corvette C3 Stingray.

Older Jaguars, Ferraris, and Rolls-Royce numbers were on display, as well as vintage Kawasaki, Harley Davidson, Honda and Bantam motorbikes.

A DMC DeLorean, featured as a time machine in the popular Back to the Future films, was also on display, wooing patrons with its unique design and opening mechanism.

Vintage 1920s and 1930s cars adorned the town, with a 1935 Lanchester Ten and a 1929 Vauxhall 20-60 Grosvenor among a slew of cars from the first half of the 20th century.

A Ford Popular from 1959 welcomed patrons upon entry to the High Street section, and indeed proved popular with its stunning interior and engine a hit with spectators.

Organiser Tim Williams said: “After a long lay off we weren’t 100 per cent sure how it would be accepted back again.

“We decided to try and scale it back a bit, but it turned out bigger than ever.

“We’re very grateful and have had such fantastic help – I’ve got 25,30 people that help every year and they’re unsung heroes.

“One of the nicest things that has happened to me today – walking around the town and people saying “what a lovely little town this is” – that’s touched me more than anything.”

After a short prize-giving ceremony to the best cars in each category (decided by model and year), Mayor of Prestatyn and Meliden Tina Jones MBE said: “It has been such a fantastic turn out, I would like to thank everyone who organised the show today.

“It takes a long time and a strong team, of course lead by the fabulous Tim Williams.”
