YESTERDAY (August 25), we were treated to a round of golf some 500ft underground in Zip World's site in Llechwedd.

This was to try out the adventure company's exciting new attraction, having developed the world’s first cavern-style underground adventure golf course.

Launched last month, Underground Golf is based in a disused mining cavern, and is only accessible by Europe's steepest cable railway.

Bright neon lights guide golfers through the cave's 18-hole course (set across four levels).

Each hole presents a new challenge and represents a particular slate mining theme, tieing in with Llechwedd's history and featuring sound effects like dynamite explosions and slate spitting.

Other activities at Zip World’s Llechwedd slate caverns site include:

  • A four-person zip line.
  • An enormous underground bouncy net playground.
  • A daring high ropes obstacle course.
  • A deep mine tour.

Marni Birchall, content manager at Zip World, said: "As a company we’re quite well-known for doing things which may be once-in-a-lifetime adventures, like the world’s fastest zip line.

"We wanted to do something that families could come back and enjoy together, more than once, and might also appeal to couples, or hen and stag dos.

"We had that amazing space underground which is absolutely perfect for it, so it just went from there.

"The idea, and the planning, was ongoing for years, but when we started constructing it, it took about four to five months to turn around, so it was quite quick in the end.

"We had a great team of local contractors and suppliers that helped us massively.

"The feedback’s been really positive so far. Everybody’s loving the fact that we’ve woven elements of the mine’s history into the course, rather than it just being a bog-standard crazy golf course.

"With it being 18 holes, it’s something that you can commit yourself to for an afternoon.

"I’ve had a go on it loads of times – I like the hole on the lower ground, where you have to knock it through the tunnel and it comes back down the other side. We’ve had a few instructors who had got a hole-in-one on that one!

"It’s really visual, as well. It’s quite impressive to look at; lots of work has gone into the lighting there – the team did a really amazing job."
