Wales will set a new attendance record for a women’s international when they host Slovenia in next month’s World Cup qualifier at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Gemma Grainger’s side, who travel to Greece before taking on closest challengers Slovenia, are bidding to wrap up a place in the play-offs for the first time, and four points from their remaining two fixtures will guarantee their progress.
The Football Association of Wales is targeting an attendance of 10,000 for the match on September 6 and cited “a surge in ticket sales on the back of a record-breaking UEFA Women’s Euro 2022” as a major contributing factor in surpassing the previous best crowd of 5,455 with more than a month to spare.
“I’m so excited that the Red Wall are turning out in their numbers to support us, making history and more noise once again in this World Cup qualifying campaign,” Chelsea defender Sophie Ingle told the FAW’s website.
“The women’s game has had huge exposure with the recent Euros, and we can’t wait to see the effect of that in the Cardiff City Stadium.
“Hopefully it will be a huge night for Welsh football as we look to reach the play-offs for the first time. We are more motivated than ever.”
