A TEAM of children from Ysgol Tir Morfa competed in the national finals of the ‘WRU Club of The Future Challenge’, winning the ALN (additional learning needs) category.

Pupils from Ysgol Tir Morfa, an additional learning needs school for boys and girls aged from three to 18, were given the challenge to create their own rugby club of the future on Minecraft: Education Edition.

Held at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, competition judges included players and inclusion officers from the Welsh Rugby Union, Hwb and Minecraft: Education Edition.

The children’s build included a rugby stadium with snow block walls to keep the players cool and a glass roof, so that the players could always see the sunshine.

The children, who assumed the name ‘Team Dragon’, also added a healthy ‘pick your own topping’ pizza restaurant which had a small farm attached, with a dough and cheese machine and even cows and pigs.

The build included wind turbines and solar panels to power the arcades, and a recycling centre, drawing inspiration from Rhyl, such as a place for Welsh bands to perform just like Rhyl arena, an ice cream shop and arcades.

The pupils created a ‘Rhyl Castle’ as they wanted Rhyl to have its own castle.

A spokesperson for the school said: “The pupils have been engaged from start to finish on this project and we intend to share the build with other pupils so that they can walk around the build and learn about Rhyl.

“We would like to say a huge thank you to the Welsh Rugby Union, Minecraft: Education Edition, Hwb and Sarah Snowdon for this wonderful opportunity.”
