A GIRL from Prestatyn has passed her target of donating 200 blankets made of crisp packets for the homeless, and has also sent care packages to Ukraine.

Alyssa Dean, 12, donated 30 more blankets to the Salvation Army’s base in Rhyl, taking her total to 205 – and she plans to keep on making more yet.

Last month, she also sent a number of blankets to the “Wrexham Homeless - People Helping People” charity.

She has previously made these survival blankets, each comprised of 44 crisp packets, in aid of such organisations as the Hope Restored and Digartref Cyf charities in Llandudno and Holyhead respectively, and Denbighshire County Council’s office at Russell House in Rhyl.

The blankets form part of a care package, which also contains items including a hat, socks, gloves, biscuits, toothpaste, a toothbrush, chocolates, and shampoo.

Alyssa’s mother, Darlene, helped her create the blankets, while she has also received donations of jackets from her work, who also ran a raffle to raise funds for the project, and Alyssa’s auntie has helped sew bags together.

Darlene said: “When we asked (Salvation Army), they had run out of survival bags (from Alyssa’s previous donation).

“So she decided that we give some to them as well, after dropping some off in Wrexham as well. She’s sent some more to Ukraine, as well; 17, I think.

“We’ve got loads of people sending us crisp packets now, so she’s still doing it, fortunately! She said ‘I have no choice, I have to carry on!’”

The idea of a crisp packet blanket stemmed from ‘The Crisp Packet Project’, which began in England in 2019 and has since seen a sub-group in Prestatyn and Rhyl set up.

Alyssa, who was named International Junior Miss North Wales Pre-Teen 2021, has raised thousands through taking part in numerous pageants.

Also Prestatyn Carnival Queen in 2020, Alyssa makes the survival blankets by cleaning the crisp packets before ironing them to make them stick together.

She has her own Facebook page, including a video tutorial on how to make the crisp packet blankets, at: www.facebook.com/International-Junior-Miss-Miss-North-Wales-Pre-Teen-202122-Alyssa-112979341168234.
