Thousands of Welsh independence campaigners have marched through Wrexham.

The march had been organised by All Under One Banner Cymru (AUOBCymru) in partnership with IndyFest Wrexham and YesCymru.

AUOBCymru said the official police number for the march was between 6000 and 8000.

It was the fourth march to be held in support of Welsh independence, following rallies in Cardiff, Caernarfon and Merthyr Tydfil in 2019. The Wrexham march should have taken place in 2020 but had to be postponed due to the pandemic. 

Amongst those in attendance were Dafydd Iwan, the comedian and broadcaster Tudur Owen, Archdruid Myrddin ap Dafydd, and ‘Her Game Too' football ambassador Roopa Vyas.

As well as marching around the centre of Wrexham, those who attended listened to speakers in Llwyn Isaf, and were entertained by musicians at various venues.

Dafydd Iwan, who sang a passionate rendition of 'Yma o Hyd' said: “A new spirit is spreading throughout Wales, and the feeling is growing that we can do better for the people of Wales if we do it ourselves.

"That is the true meaning of Independence, not a separation, but joining all the other nations who govern themselves. Wales is beginning to believe in itself, and nothing can hold back a nation which has self-belief.”

Broadcaster and Comedian Tudur Owen was one of the speakers calling for an independent Wales at Wrexham’s civic centre. He said: “The case for independence has been made. We now need the consent of the people of Wales and that is our next challenge.”

Plaid Cymru leader, Adam Price also attended alongside the party's Westminster leader, Liz Saville Roberts, who said on Twitter: "We can’t stand by whilst Westminster continues to impose inequalities on our nation. There is another way. A path where we carve out our own future. Pleased to stand in solidarity with fellow #WelshIndy supporters at the @YesCymru @AUOBCymru rally in #Wrecsam today."

There was also a special video message of support from Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald who said: “I wish you every success with your march today… you will always have friends here in Ireland. Above all, I wish you a future that matches the hopes and aspirations of the Welsh people.”

The next March for Independence will be held in Cardiff on October 1, 2022.
