AN ONLINE fundraiser page has raised more than £7,000 in memory of a girl from Dyserth who died aged 10, while her close friend has also started her own campaign to bring in additional funds.
Megs Whieldon died in March, having suffered from complex medical needs, and one of her oldest friends, Lowri Tomlinson, has made tireless efforts to raise money for a children’s hospice who provided great support to Megs’ family.
Lowri, who went to school with Megs at Ysgol Hiraddug, is encouraging all Denbighshire schools to run, walk, skip or dance a mile to raise money for Tŷ Gobaith children’s hospice.
Lowri’s mum, Abby Winney, said: “Lowri came up with this idea of a campaign to raise money for Tŷ Gobaith, because they helped a lot with Megs, and when she passed away, they were just fantastic with her mum and dad.
“It was just a huge shock. Since pre-school, they were really close. Whenever Megs was in school, Lowri was always with her. They knew each other since they were about three. It was devastating.
“So, Lowri took this idea to school that she wanted to raise money for Tŷ Gobaith, and came up with people running, walking or whatever they want to do.
“The reception kids have done it as well: they walked around the school field seven times to walk a mile, and parents can put a pound in, or whatever they want to donate.”
Ysgol Hiraddug is also posting its achievements from the “Mile for Megs” campaign on its Twitter page, which you can find at: www.twitter.com/ysgolhiraddug.
Parents from the schools will have an opportunity to sponsor any challenges via ParentPay.

Abby added: “Megs’ uncle cycled 100 miles, and when Lowri took this idea to her headmaster, he took it to a meeting, and now most Denbighshire schools have picked it up as well, so I think it will be ongoing for a couple of weeks yet.
“She’s constantly on the go. My mum and dad have a caravan in Welshpool and she got quite a few people involved there to do it and put some money in.
“She’s going to the Caerwys Agricultural Show tomorrow (June 11) and is going to ask people to donate there.
“She’s just ran with it – literally – and taken it everywhere, and the page online is an open-ended page, so people can always donate on that.
“They’re hoping for at least £200 (from the exercise campaign).”
The online page has currently raised more than £7,100, which will also go to Tŷ Gobaith.
A post on the page read: “This site is a tribute to our amazing, sassy, courageous Megs. Much-loved by everyone who knew her and will be remembered always.
“Beautiful daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin and friend.
“The support and kindness Tŷ Gobaith have shown to our whole family has been invaluable.
“The work they do in supporting special families like ours is only made possible through donations and support from well-wishers and Megs loved the time she spent there.
“They also allowed us to spend a few precious days with her after she had passed.
“Our Megs. Forever 10.”
