A VEGAN restaurant based in Rhuddlan which was only set up during the COVID-19 pandemic has celebrated winning a prestigious award.
Green Island Bistro, based on the town’s High Street, saw off competition from nine other businesses to be crowned the winner of café/bistro of the year (North Wales) at the Food Awards Wales 2022.
Owner Sara Turner, who attended the awards ceremony at the Cardiff City Stadium on Monday (April 11) with her husband and daughter, was understandably delighted to win, following news of their nomination last autumn.
As well as running the bistro, Sara’s business also operates as a vegan/plant-based food delivery service covering Abergele, Kinmel Bay, Rhyl, Prestatyn, St Asaph and Rhuddlan.

To win this award felt particularly special to Sara, she said, given she initially started the business as a home delivery service as recently as June 2020, before moving into a permanent outlet in Rhuddlan later that summer.
“It was just amazing to be nominated and I really didn’t think we stood a chance of winning, especially being the only fully vegan cafe/bistro in the category, and also only being in our second year of trading.
“It felt amazing to win. Setting up a business during a pandemic has not been easy, and being presented this award makes all the hard work feel worth it.”
