WHETHER your curtains need repairing or you want an embroidered gift for someone, one business on Prestatyn’s High Street is bound to meet your sewing-related needs.
That’s been the case for almost exactly seven years for The Sewing Room when, in April 2015, owner Emma Picken drew on her wealth of experience making repairs and alterations to set up her own business.
Previously working for Johnsons Dry Cleaners in Rhyl and Llandudno, Emma, who has lived in Prestatyn for 18 years, used her redundancy money to set up The Sewing Room, and hasn’t looked back since.
She said: “We offer a repairs and alterations service for garments and soft furnishings, including bridesmaid’s dresses, curtains, coats, or shortening, tapering, and repairing holes or tears.
“We sell personalised gifts and memory cushions: baby clothes, baby blankets, mugs, using embroidery or vinyl, (and) we sell haberdashery including buttons, ribbons, threads, knitting needles and knitting wool.
“We do our own (personalised gifts), but if people bring things in, we personalise them as well. For me, the most popular is occasion wear: bridesmaid’s or prom dresses, that kind of thing.”

Another recent highlight for the shop was coming first in a window display competition along the High Street to mark St David’s Day earlier in 2022.
As part of the celebrations, High Street businesses were encouraged to decorate their shop windows with a St David’s Day and Welsh Theme.
The Mayor of Prestatyn and Meliden, Councillor Sharon Frobisher, and her Consort, Harriet Frobisher, together with Prestatyn Carnival Queen Alyssa Dean, walked along the High Street judging all of the St David’s Day-themed windows.
The judges were looking for the use of the Welsh language, references to St David’s Day, Welsh culture and creativity.
Having made similarly decorative and patriotic window displays at The Sewing Room previously, it should perhaps come as no surprise that The Sewing Room came out on top.
Emma added: “I printed off a Welsh dragon, cut it in card and stuck all red buttons over it.
“That was a massive eyecatcher; everybody stopped and looked at that. I did it a couple of years ago, and people even pop their head through the door when they see it to say: ‘That’s amazing!’”
