A WOMAN who turned 70 last weekend is to mark the occasion by facing a daring event to raise money for the St Asaph-based hospice she volunteers for.

Violet Fullagar celebrated the milestone on March 12, while tomorrow (March 19) would also have been her father’s 100th birthday.

Violet, who lives in Ruthin having moved to North Wales from Kent (where her family still live) a decade ago, is to take on a “wing walk” for St Kentigern Hospice, which provides care and support for patients with a life-limiting condition and their families.

Since shortly before Christmas, Violet has been volunteering at the hospice’s Ruthin shop for three mornings a week.

At Headcorn Aerodrome, Kent on March 31, Violet will take on the wing walk, whereby participants are either strapped into a seat on the exterior of a plane, or able to move along the plane’s wings.

‘Light Up a Life’ campaign raises more than £17,000 for St Asaph-based hospice

She said: “I turned 70 on March 12 and my father would have been 100 on March 19, so I’m going to celebrate them both at the same time.

“Now I’m getting closer to it, the more excited I’m getting - even if I crawl up the aeroplane, I’ve got to do it.

“I’ve got myself a line jacket, which I’ve been wearing in the shop, advertising the wing walk.

“It was a case of: ‘Why am I sitting indoors on my own when there’s a whole world out there?’ I’m a pensioner, I don’t need to earn money, so this has been the best decision I’ve made since I’ve been in Wales.”

You can sponsor Violet by visiting the St Kentigern shop in Ruthin and adding to her collection tins, or by calling the fundraising office and donating via telephone on 01745 775415.
