FOUR fundraisers from Rhyl and Prestatyn will be taking part in a 62-mile bike ride in London, in aid of cancer charities.

The ‘Gas and Go Ladies’ (made up of Ffion Hughes, Jess Graney, Molly Dunbobbin and Nikki Ball) have taken on this challenge to raise money for three women's cancer charities: Breast Cancer Now, Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action.

With the group expecting training to take a year, the end goal is to complete the distance in six hours.

The group had previously fundraised for the planned event ‘Women v Cancer - Ride the Night 2021’, that was due to take place in May last year before being cancelled.

The ladies, who work together at Glan Clwyd Hospital in Rhyl, have now turned their attention this year’s Ride the Night London on April 30, which had also been postponed in 2020.

Having already raised £965 (some of which was from the previous fundraising effort) out of a target of £1,000, the band are excited ahead of the coming challenge.

Nikki Ball said: “I'm the old one of the group and I’m going to end up walking like Tina Turner but it will be worth it if we can raise money for this worthy cause.

“I have never done anything like this before but I'm looking forward to taking on this challenge.”

Ffion Hughes said: “I've decided to do the 62 mile ride the night challenge in London, to support women who are currently fighting the battle and for those who have beaten cervical, breast and ovarian cancer.

“This is something close to myself and others around me.”

Every year, more than 7,000 women across the UK are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, with one in seven developing breast cancer in their lifetime and 3,200 new cases of cervical cancer diagnosed each year.

Keen cyclist Molly Dunbobbin said: “I’ve decided to convert from a mountain bike to a roadie!

“I would be over the moon if we could hit our target and I appreciate anyone who is in the position to support us and donate.”

Jess Graney added: “I am sure every person knows of someone who has battled with this terrible illness.

“I would appreciate anyone who would take the time to read my team’s story and if possible, donate.

“All money raised will be split equally between the three charities, which will help improve early diagnosis, fund visionary and lifesaving research to those diagnosed, and improve the much-needed support for all women affected.”

Ride the Night 2022 will also be a celebration of the event’s tenth anniversary.
