ABERGELE’S Georgia Wilson has claimed the first medal by a Welsh athlete at the Paralympics in Tokyo, winning dressage bronze on her Games debut.
The 25-year-old from North Wales finished third on her horse Sakura behind teammate Lee Pearson, whose victory makes him a 12-time Paralympic champion.
Austria’s Pepo Puch split the two Brits in the Grade 2 individual test at Equestrian Park.
Wilson, the 2019 European freestyle gold medallist, only came into the British team as a late replacement for Sophie Christiansen.
But she made the most of her chance on day two of competition in the Japanese capital.
Speaking on Channel 4, she said: "It's incredible – it was a surprise to be here but it's a nice surprise to see how Sakura has gone.
"She's only young still and we haven't had a lot of time together but she's a mare who will do anything for you, so she's really good."
On replacing Christiansen in the British team, she added: "I couldn't do it without her, she gives me so much guidance – the training is invaluable."
