A BRAVE boy whose has been told his cancer has returned was given a boost by a fundraising group.
Steve Evans, of Belief, along with member Brenda Nash, paid a visit to Shane Drabble, who is in Alder Hey children’s hospital in Liverpool, armed with goodies including a PS4 along with camera, a VR headset and some games.
Shane, aged nine of Rhyl, has Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.
He was diagnosed in September 2017 and was in remission but was still on treatment; the treatment length is three and a half years.
In August, the family were told that Shane had relapsed. The Christ Church School pupil now has to go down the T cell bone marrow route.
Speaking about being contacted by Belief, Shane's mum Tracey said: "I was shocked and overwhelmed when Steve message me to ask if he could help in anyway. Shane had a big smile on his face when Steve and Brenda from Belief came with the gifts to Alder Hey. He was going through a tough time and they made him smile.
"Shane won't be able to go to school for a long time."
Shane has eight siblings altogether.
Tracey, whose husband is also called Shane, said: "It is very important to raise awareness of childhood cancer as you never think it would be your child until it is.
"As a family we our devastated about this news, but my son gets up every day even though he is going through a lot he still had a big smile on his face.
"We have a long road to go with his treatment. We will be going for a nine day stay for him to start this new treatment before he heads for his bone marrow.
"His siblings are being tested as well as his full siblings.
"As a mum and dad and all his family, the support of his troops were so proud. As a family, we were overwhelmed.
"Life has changed for us as a family but am so proud of how his sisters and brother have pulled together."
Shane was on treatment for 23 months before he relapsed.
The family now have three visits a week to Alder Hey until he becomes a inpatient for treatment called Blinatumomab.
Steve, of Belief, said upon hearing about Shane’s battle, Belief wanted to contacted Shane's mum to see if they could help alleviate the boredom of hospital.
Steve said: “This loving family received the devastating news that, after already having had two years of treatment, Shane’s cancer had returned.
“This brave young boy has been through more in his short life than many of us do in a lifetime.
“Despite the obvious pain he was in, he was delighted [with the gifts] and wishes to thank Belief so much.
“Tracey’s loving, caring and hugely positive approach is plain to see, needless to say.
“I’m sure I speak for us all when I say we wish Shane and his loving family all the very best.”
A charity's darts tournament will take place at the Cons Club Prestatyn on September 7 in aid of Shane's. Registration takes place between 11am and 11.45am. £5 entry upfront to paypal at Steveizzy@gmx.co.uk. There will be raffle prizes and a separate ladies competition.
