EFFORTS are being made to engage schoolchildren to stamp out a spate of "disturbing" anti-social behaviour at Prestatyn Market.
Vale of Clwyd MP Chris Ruane has met with North Wales Police (NWP) to discuss the increase in deliberate fires at the Gas Works Lane site and on nearby grassland.
An action plan is now place organised by a partnership between NWP, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service's Arson Reduction Team (ART), schools and youth clubs to educate young people people of the consequences of deliberate firestarting.
Mr Ruane said:“It was disturbing to hear the reports of fires being started.”
“There is not just the danger to damaging property and other facilities but also the danger to lives – to those starting the fires and anyone who has the misfortune to be nearby.
“I would obviously urge those who are starting the fires to stop but also urge anyone who sees this taking place to report it as soon as possible to the police and fire service so they can catch the perpetrators in the act.”
A spokesperson for fire confirmed that the (ART) have identified an issue with the site as a target for deliberate fires following a number of incidents.
Amanda Venables, Arson Reduction officer, said: “As well as the associated monetary cost, these fires put extra pressure on our resources and can put the lives of the fire crews and the public at risk. Whilst crews are busy dealing with these incidents they would not be able to meet what may be a real need for them to attend a life threatening situation elsewhere.
“Deliberate fire setting is a serious form of anti-social behaviour, and is a criminal offence.
“We would encourage anyone with information on arson to call 101, or crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
