GUITARIST Trefor Owen will be evoking the sounds of summer when he teams up with trumpeter Neil Yates to bring his popular Latin-flavoured quintet 'Wales Plays Brazil' to the region next month.

They will be guests of the North Wales Jazz Society at the White House, Rhuallt on Wednesday, March 13 (8pm).

Twenty years after recording his CD 'Wales Plays Brazil' with saxophonist Dave O'Higgins, Owen was inspired to revisit the material with an exciting new quintet that would see a core line-up of two guitars, bass and Latin percussion joined by a featured special guest.

For this North Wales Jazz presentation he will be joined by one of the UK's leading jazz trumpeters, Neil Yates.

Living up to his belief that music should be both beautiful and communicative, Trefor's reincarnation of the quintet performs a number of his own original lyrical compositions which appeared on the album, and some well-chosen standards including Brazilian classics by Antonio Carlos Jobim, like 'Wave' and 'One Note Samba'.

Internationally renowned Owen has toured the UK with such guitar greats as the USA's Mundell Lowe and Ireland's Louis Stewart, and has performed extensively in the USA, appearing in San Francisco and LA, at New York's Classic American Guitar Show, and the prestigious Jazz Cafe at the famous Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC.

Neil Yates might be familiar to many North Wales Jazz audiences as co-leader of the Jazz Worriers alongside tenor saxophonist Dean Masser.

He has performed in the pop world with artists like The Brand New Heavies, Robbie Williams and many more, and has played with jazz greats including Peter King, Don Weller, Denys Baptiste, the Jazz Jamaica All Stars, Clark Tracey and NYJO.

Completing the line-up of Wales Plays Brazil are Andy Hulme (guitar), Ed Harrison (double bass) and Gaz Hughes (Latin percussion).

Admission is £8, with concessions £7, while school children and Students' Union members are charged £3.
