PUPILS will be celebrating the pleasure of reading during a reading event at Ysgol Glan Clwyd.

There will be a variety of activities throughout the week, each with the aim of raising awareness on the importance of reading and how inspirational it can be.

Staff will be sharing their own reading habits such as when and where they love to read, as well as sharing information about their most memorable titles.

The highlight of the week will be on the final day when staff will dress up as their favourite character and will take part in a light-hearted lunchtime session of hot seating and role play, with the last word to be given to the pupils who will vote for their choice as best character.

Each pupil will be gifted with a book voucher to the value of £7 and will be given an opportunity to choose a Welsh book, thanks to the Schools Love Reading campaign funded by the Welsh Government.

A pop-up stall will be set up and managed by the Welsh department where pupils will be able to see the wide variety of books available and exchange their gift of a voucher for a brand new book.

Head pupil Carwyn Pierce said: “The thrill of opening a brand new book to immerse yourself into the mind of a talented author is an experience that you would never get from a movie or TV programme.

“A well written book allows a mixture of the author and the reader's imagination, resulting in various interpretations and discussions about the book.

“I’m looking forward to next week’s activities to give us an opportunity to share our passion for reading.”

Headteacher Sian Alwen said: “Following the difficult years of Covid it is now essential that we look at ensuring that our pupils' literacy skills are strengthened so that they are ready to face the challenges of the world of work and life in general.

“What better way than reading? Promoting reading and all its advantages is therefore very important here at Ysgol Glan Clwyd.

“Above all the enjoyment found in escaping between the covers of a book is one that cannot be beaten.

“Reading encourages individuals to show empathy, to live life through the eyes of another character perhaps from completely different backgrounds to their own. Reading opens up new worlds.”
