RHYL narrowly avoided a Welsh Cup upset by beating Goytre United 2-1 at the Corbett Sports Stadium.
The Welsh Premier League side had too much quality for their lower league counterparts, and the Lilywhites will look to maintain their impressive recent form when they travel to Aberystwyth Town on Sunday (3.30pm).
Greg Strong’s side began Saturday’s game the stronger, but despite dominating possession for long periods, Levi Mackin’s saved shot was the only chance of note.
Mackin was proving to be an imposing force on the game, and he wasted the best chance of the half when he dragged his shot wide when through on goal.
The deadlock was finally broken after the interval when the hosts were awarded a penalty when Greg Stones’ strike was handled in the box.
Mark Cadwallader duly slotted home the spot kick to give the home side a deserved lead.
After missing a number of chances immediately after, the Lilywhites doubled their advantage on 64 minutes when Liam Dawson struck a 25-yard drive into the corner.
The visitors were given a route back into the game on 87 minutes when Rhyl were reduced to ten men when David Thompson was sent off for a professional foul.
Adam Orme struck the resulting free-kick past Alex Ramsay to half the deficit, but despite a stream of United attacks in the closing stages, Strong’s men held on and advanced to the fourth round.
Sunday’s game in-front of the S4C Sgorio cameras will be another difficult test, and a win would see Rhyl move further clear of the bottom two places in the Welsh Premier League table.
