RHYL promenade has been made a no-go area for drunken youths.

An anti-social behaviour crackdown came into force on Sunday and means that drunken teens can be banned from the resort’s promenade.

The orders have met with approval from Cllr Geraldine Ann Jones, whose Bodfor ward covers much of the affected areas.

She said: “It’s a good thing for Rhyl. What this will do is give us a bit of authority back and make youngsters aware of what they are doing. They will have to understand they aren’t going to be able to go around with cans, throwing them away and making a mess.

“People should feel comfortable to go around Marine Lake and the promenade and not have lads walking down the street ‘giving it large’.”

Cllr Jones said young children and elderly residents would feel safer and the limitations would also help tackle underage drinking.

The order means that youngsters can only go on the promenade between 9pm and 6am if they are accompanied by an adult.

The police will have the power to challenge youths and disperse crowds.

Insp Dyfan Jones said: “We are very pleased that the dispersal areas have been renewed and extended this year. A great many people are working very hard to improve and regenerate the coastline and I have no doubt that these dispersal areas will assist in that endeavour.

“Drinking in public has an adverse effect not only on visitors’ perception but also on the quality of life of residents. Working closely with our partners in the local authorities I’m confident that we can have a positive impact on the area.”

Those flouting the new measures can be hit with a fine of up to £2,500 or a custodial sentence of up to three months.

The two orders cover areas including the town’s Memorial Garden and extend along Rhyl prom from Splash Point to the Blue Bridge.
